Building the Body Buck

My brother Roan was down visiting so I put him to work helping me build the Body buck. We completed it in a afternoon. All I have to do is to add the foam padding along the contour edges. I built a modified version of the body buck with the plans found here.

Roan starting on to build the frame while I work on the OSB board cutouts.

Finished body buck tucked away on the side of the house. I didn’t need this to be able to roll above the car but still wanted it elevated in order to store parts beneath the body.

Donor Parts Arrival & Parts Cleaning

We decided to go with Cypress Auto Recyclers for the donor parts needed for our Cobra build. Basically what Cypress does is take a complete Mustang and strip off all the parts needed to build a Cobra with the Factory Five kit.

What we ended up with was the drivetrain and parts from a 1995 Mustang GT with only 73K miles!

The donor parts arrived early June 2006 in a big wooden crate.

Here is Austin checking out the strange box. If it were only a few years ago, Austin would have had the crate chewed open in minutes.

All the parts needed packed away in the crate.

Front Brakes, Spindles, Lower Control Arms, and Gas tank fresh out of the crate.

Wrestled the rear differential into the garage.

Another shot of the rear differential. NOTE: We had Cypress swap the axels out for what’s called “FOX” width axels. Basically this means that the width of the rear will be the same width as the earlier mustangs (called Fox Body mustangs). The axels that normally come on a ’95 are an 1.5” longer then the Fox width ones. Having Fox width will allow us to run a deep dish rim in the rear if we like. Cypress was kind enough to do the axel swap free of charge before shipping us the rear diff. All we need to do is order a pair of caliper offset brackets to move the mounting of the calipers back 1.5” to match the new axels.

Steering rack before cleanup and paint.

Freshly painted steering rack. I used Duplicolor DE 1650 Cast Coat Aluminum spray paint. Came out pretty good.
